USPS OIG Report: Delivery and Customer Service Issues – Brooklyn, NY

This report presents the results of our audit assessing mail delivery and customer service issues at the Greenpoint and Williamsburg Stations, Brooklyn, NY. We conducted this audit in response to a June 21, 2019, request from four New York members of Congress (Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Representatives Nydia Velazquez and Carolyn Maloney) and New York state Assemblyman Joseph Lentol. These members raised concerns of untimely mail deliveries, misdeliveries, and no deliveries in specific ZIP Codes in Brooklyn, NY.

We found undelivered and delayed mail at both stations as well as deficiencies in scanning. We also found unsecured bank deposits, cash drawers, money orders, and stamps as well as significant building safety and maintenance issues.

According to reports, at the daily management telecons, bosses are instructed to refer to the postal ‘business’, no longer the postal ‘service’.

It is hard for me to understand why perhaps the best postal service in the world is in such a shambles. I realize the problem we are all facing these days, and the increase volume of mail and parcels, but not getting any mail in 9 days? Is beyond my comprehension. This is not the first, it is quite often and getting worse.
