The organization recently revised its Field Onboarding Program, which is part of ongoing efforts to improve new-hire training and equip employees with the tools they need to do their jobs.
The program provides all new bargaining unit employees with two days of classroom orientation, along with additional training tailored to their specific job.
Santa Clara, CA, City Carrier Assistant Marlene Kinohi joined USPS in October and is pleased with her training, which included shadowing more experienced carriers.
âIt was awesome and gets you ready for when you get your own route,â she said.
As part of the training, newcomers also learn scanning, mail classifications, safety procedures, loading and unloading a vehicle, and marketing postal products and services.
âThey made it understandable so you wonât feel overwhelmed,â Kinohi said.
The program also provides new employees with a âwelcome kitâ that contains a tote, cap and other items to help them promote the USPS brand and to use on the job.
âThe welcome kit is an important part of our onboarding efforts,â said Learning and Development Director Susan McKeen. âIt lets new employees know that weâre excited to welcome them to the postal family and eager to help them succeed.â
