USPS: Moving forward – Employees hear advice on ‘networking night’

If “speed dating” can help someone find a significant other, can “speed networking” help postal employees advance in their careers?

San Diego District is putting this theory to the test. The district, faced with more than 80 Executive and Administration Schedule vacancies, recently held a “speed networking night” that allowed more than 200 EAS candidates to meet district leaders and receive their career advice.

Here’s how it worked: The candidates sat at round tables headed by a district leader. A buzzer sounded every eight minutes, prompting the leader to move to the next table. By the end of the evening, all participants had mixed and mingled.

“I’m glad I came,” said Acting Supervisor Sonya Baylor. “It was interesting to hear San Diego District Manager Jim Olson talk about all the different areas of opportunity that are available.”
