Pittsburgh Area Retiree Chapter’s “The Retiree Record” – July Edition

PittsRetRec_JulyTHE STAPLE’S CAMPAIGN

The series of demonstrations against Staple’s hijacking post office jobs and our work is ongoing. The kick-off was held at the Staple’s store on McKnight Road, @ a block from the McKnight Station, on June 10, to coincide with the APWU’s “Day Of Action”, On that date, or other dates in close proximity to the 10th, massive demonstrations were held all over the country at Staple’s stores, even in areas that do not have post office operations at this time! In our area, leadership for the kick-off came from rank and file Metro members and our Retiree Chapter, with support from Branch 84, NALC. This was followed up with a second demonstration at the McKnight Road store on June 17.

Other demonstrations will have been held by the time this newsletter is received. The current schedule is for the East Liberty store on June 26, the Cranberry Township store on July I, and the Robinson Township store on July 11. The planning for these and future demonstrations is very fluid, giving no time to alert our membership in advance. But we have apparently embarrassed the Metro Local to wake up and get more involved. The last planning meeting was held at the Metro office on June l8! Hopefully they will be taking a greater leadership responsibility for these activities, thus providing a central clearing house for information, etc.

We encourage our able bodied members and their families to join these demonstrations. We have as much at stake in defeating this dastardly plan as the active members do. If you are able and interested to join with us, call the Chapter at 724-947-9374 or the Metro office at 412-321-4700 to get details of the times and places where other demonstrations will be held. If we don’t nip this in the bud, all customer services jobs can go down the drain!

LATE FLASH – AS THIS ISSUE OF THE RETIREE RECORD WAS BEING PREPARED, THE JUNE 26 DEMONSTRATION WAS HELD AT THE EAST LIBERTY STAPLE’S.  THIS FOLLOWED THE MID SUMMER BLAST THAT WAS HELD ON JUNE 25, WHERE WE DISTRIBUTED THE DEMONSTRATION SCHEDULE FOR THE PARTIERS.  WE ARE PLEASED TO REPORT THAT RETIREES SHOWED UP AT THE DEMONSTRATION IN UNPRECEDENTED NUMBERS!  THANKS AND A TIP OF THE HAT TO THOSE THAT BRAVED THE BLAZING SUN TO JOIN THE DEMONSTRATION.  YOU HAVE SHOWN ONCE AGAIN THE COMMITMENT OUR CHAPTER HAS TO MAKE OUR MARK WHENEVER CALLED UPON TO JOIN THESE CRITICAL ACTIVITIES. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!
