Steward work for APO’s and RMPO’s

gas-mileage_2Our local has received a heavy workload from our APO’s and RMPO’s. Our stewards are accumulating a heavy workload in representing these offices. The big problem is that they are doing a lot of work off the clock and racking up mileage on their vehicles trying to investigate and process grievances. Although a lot is done over the phone, much of it really needs to be addressed in person, especially maintenance issues.

We were wondering how other locals deal with this problem. We can’t continue to expect our stewards to put in so much of their own time, gas money, and wear and tear on those vehicles without compensation. That’s not an easy thing with dwindling membership and funds. There must be other locals facing these same problems. Any suggestions?

    The Goldberg POStPlan arbitration award converted tens of thousands of non-bargaining unit PMR jobs to bargaining unit PSE, PTF, NTFT and FTR positions. That was wonderful for those folks, but it resulted in a tremendous increase in grievance workload in those offices. Most have no domiciled stewards. A steward appointed under Article 17.2.C is not entitled to travel time, mileage or time on the clock to represent them at pre-disciplinary interviews or to investigate, present, or adjust grievances. The national APWU should create and compensate stewards for MAL offices in the field like the NRLCA does for their members. Find Your NRLCA Steward
    Retired APWU stewards would be the cheapest source of labor.
