Richmond District has achieved quite a feat — it has the highest number of  Village Post Offices (VPOs) in the Capital Metro Area and 21 of the 685 VPOs the Postal Service has opened across the nation.

The district’s 21st VPO recently opened in the convenience store at Williamsburg Landing, a continuing care retirement community that is home to 500 residents near Colonial Williamsburg and the College of William and Mary in Virginia.

“This provides a wonderful service for our community,” said Sr. Director of Community Relations Kathleen Kammer. “We’re already very busy, selling stamps left and right.”

Those sentiments were echoed by customer Shirley Roberts. “Bringing the Post Office to our community is a splendid idea,” she said. “We have already bought stamps and used the mailing services. We’re so happy to have this convenience.”

VPO_uspsVPOs are located inside convenience stores, markets and other neighborhood businesses. USPS started the program in 2011 to increase access to the most requested postal products and services.

There are now VPOs in 47 states, with more on the way.
