USPS: There are rules when looking for extra work

USPS employees can look for a second job with most companies, although there are some exceptions.

The Postal Service is reminding employees to follow the organization’s ethics rules when considering outside employment.

Employees can look for a second job with most companies — including those that do business with USPS.

There are a few prohibited outside employers. For example, employees cannot seek second jobs with FedEx and UPS, as well as Amazon and most of its subsidiaries.

Some outside employment requires prior approval from the USPS Ethics Office and an employee’s manager.

Employees also cannot work on a postal matter involving a prospective outside employer or seek employment with any company with whom they are working on a postal matter.

The Ethics Office can determine if the outside job requires prior approval, and work with the appropriate manager to secure approval and to recuse the employee from any postal matters involving the prospective employer.

Email the Ethics Office at ethics.help@usps.gov for assistance or call the ethics helpline at 202-268-6346.
