USPS: Tax deadline extended to May 17

The Internal Revenue Service is giving taxpayers extra time to file their federal income taxes.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will extend this year’s federal income tax filing deadline from April 15 to May 17 to give people more time to navigate challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic.

Taxpayers can also delay payment of any money owed the agency until May 17. Those who need more time to submit their returns can request an Oct. 15 extension.

The new deadline does not apply to estimated tax payments, which remain due by April 15.

The extended deadline applies only to federal income returns and taxes. Taxpayers should check to see if due dates for state taxes have changed. has a special section with tips for customers who mail their returns, a list of products and services that can help paper filers, information on Post Office hours, and links to useful guidance on the IRS website.

The IRS announced the news this week and said it will provide additional guidance later.
