No Grenadian should lose their job, officials say, even as the United States Post Office plans to close processing operations in the Lake City next year.

Processing personnel should be offered other jobs, perhaps in other locations, once the downsizing takes effect in 2015, said a spokesperson for the postal service.

The USPS announced in late June that it would further consolidate its processing operations in the Magnolia State, closing centers in Grenada, Hattiesburg and Gulfport.

Spokesperson Enola C. Rice  explained.
“Since 2012, the postal service has consolidated 141 mail processing facilities without laying off employees,” said Rice. “Employees are offered other jobs within the postal service.”

Rice would not comment as to whether or not those jobs might require employees to move.

Rice described the downsizing as “a continuation of network rationalization activity approved by the Postal Service Board of Governors in 2011.”

The Grenada Post Office does not currently have a postmaster. It has an officer in charge.
