USPS: Mobile mammogram services offered

Atlanta District employees gathering outside the mobile mammogram bus include, from left, occupational health nurses Renee Williams-Hope and Maxine Henry and Mary Russell, acting distribution operations manager.

A bright pink bus recently arrived at the Atlanta Processing and Distribution Center to offer employees an important health screening — mammograms.

Atlanta District, part of Capital Metro Area, arranged the screening to accommodate workers with hectic schedules.

Several employees received their first mammograms on the bus, including Letter Carrier Veronica Humphrey, who was happy she didn’t have to use sick leave.

“The mobile unit was clean, the room was private and the technicians were professional,” she said.

Tyrone Dash, a Postal Police supervisor, and Mary Chandler, a mammogram technologist, prepare to welcome Atlanta District employees to the bus.

Other USPS facilities across the nation offer similar services.

For example, a mobile mammogram service recently screened 23 employees in Greensboro District, also part of Capital Metro Area.

“We’re always striving to provide opportunities that promote personal health and well-being for employees and their families,” said Greensboro Occupational Health Nurse Alma Whittington.

Advance, NC, Rural Carrier Suzan Brooks couldn’t find the time for a mammogram — until the mobile service came to her.

“I had put off having a mammogram for several years,” Brooks said, adding that she encourages other employees to take advantage of the service.

“The mobile mammogram takes about 15 minutes out of your day for something that could save your life,” she said.
