The day aims to raise awareness of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Heart disease accounts for about 1 in every 4 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
About half of all Americans have at least one of the three key risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol or smoking.
National Wear Red Day is part of American Heart Month.
