The Postal Service is reminding employees that they’ll need a Real ID Act-compliant driver license or ID card beginning Wednesday, May 7, if they fly domestically for business or for personal reasons.

The Real ID Act of 2005 established minimum documentation requirements for state-issued driver licenses and ID cards. A Real ID Act-compliant license or ID card will have a star in the upper right corner.

Called “Real IDs,” these forms of identification will be required for anyone who wishes to board a domestic flight.

A U.S. passport, military ID or a Department of Homeland Security-approved ID can be used in place of a Real ID.

Employees who don’t have a Real ID or an acceptable alternative should visit their state’s department of motor of vehicles to obtain one. You’ll need either a birth certificate or passport; Social Security number; and two proofs of residency, such a utility bill or bank statement. Individual states may also have additional requirements.
