embezzlement_2A former treasurer for the South Dakota Postal Workers Union has been charged in federal court with embezzlement for a theft of more than $36,000 from the union.

Susan Marie Haugen, 55, was indicted this week on one count of embezzlement and two counts of theft of labor union assets for a series of transactions that took place between May of 2010 and March of 2014.

The grand jury accused Haugen of making more than $25,000 in unauthorized cash withdrawals from the union’s bank account and using the union’s credit and debit cards to spend another $11,000. All the money was used for personal expenses, the indictment says.

Each theft count is punishable by up to five years in prison. Haugen’s initial appearance date has not been set.
