(July 22, 2014) President Hegarty addressed the Delegates of the APWUâs 2014 National convention sanctioning a message of solidarity between our Unions. When commenting on the recently signed Postal Union Alliance, Hegarty said, âWe are not divided on the issues â those who would do us harm cannot divide and conquer.â President Hegarty noted that the Postal Union Alliance has solidified the joint spirit of cooperation that has us working towards common goals like never before.
Hegarty spoke at length about the onslaught of never-ending Postal reform legislation, and the Unionâs unified presence on Capitol Hill when calling on all Delegates to deliver the Unionâs message to their Senators and Congressional Representatives. Hegarty commented, âTake the time to write that letter⊠we need to hold our member of Congress accountable.â Hegarty also commented on the Unionâs opposition to the Postal Serviceâs plant closures, the degradation of service standards, the preservation of six-day delivery and door-to-door delivery.
President Hegarty acknowledged the Unionâs ongoing partnership when addressing such issues as safety, health and security, but spoke most passionately about the NPMHUâs wholehearted support for the APWU initiated Stop Staples campaign. Hegarty said, âWe were happy to join with you in numerous locations around the country in the Stop Staples campaign. I can tell you we sent a message loud and clear; the U.S. Mail is not for sale.â
