Former postal supervisor given suspended sentence for stealing hundreds of greeting cards, money inside

QUAD CITIES, Ill./Iowa (KWQC) – A former Moline postal supervisor accused of stealing greeting cards with cash or gift cards was given a suspended sentence.

Justin Brown was arrested June 28 after Davenport Police searched his home and found 487 cards greetings cards for weddings, birthdays, graduations and Father’s Day, according to court documents.

Brown pleaded guilty in September 2024 to felony second-degree theft and was scheduled to be sentenced in December. He failed to complete presentencing paperwork, and a warrant was issued.

On June 11, Brown was sentenced to Iowa Department of Corrections for up to five years, with credit for time served at Scott County Jail.

Brown was also sentenced on drug charges: two counts of possession of controlled substance, one count of unlawful possession of prescription drug. He was sentenced to up to a year on each count.

The judge suspended all the sentences and placed Brown on three years supervised release with the following conditions:

  • complete the substance abuse evaluation and any recommended treatment
  • complete a mental health evaluation and any recommended treatment
  • abstain from the use of alcohol and illegal controlled substances
  • maintain employment.

He was ordered to pay a fine of $1,025 for the mail theft, but the court found he is unable to make payments.

All the mail found in his home was being sent from Illinois cities, including Geneseo, Moline, East Moline, Milan, Rock Island and Silvis.

Brown was also facing DUI charges in Rock Island County.
