(August 3, 2014) A former law enforcement officer is scheduled to be sentenced Monday for conspiring to fraudulently issue and embezzle at least $16,000 in postal money orders at a contract postal station in downtown Statesville in 2011.

Steven Stone pleaded guilty in federal court in July 2013 to conspiracy, court records show.

Stone and an unnamed co-conspirator with whom he had “a personal relationship” deposited the proceeds from 24 fraudulently issued postal money orders into Stone’s account at the State Employees Credit Union, prosecutors said in court records.

Stone was a family member of the person who owned the contract station on West Front Street at the time of the fraudulent transactions, court records show.

Records show Stone and the co-conspirator worked or formerly worked at the contract station at the time of the fraud and embezzlement. Court records don’t say where Stone also worked as a law enforcement officer, nor do they name the co-conspirator.

The station has been under new ownership for at least a year, and postal money orders are no longer available there, a worker at the station said Friday.

Stone’s sentencing is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the federal courthouse in Statesville.
