APWU Clerk NBA Turney: Thank you Custodians

Carol Stream, IL, Maintenance Operations Supervisor Freeland Gogins and Custodian JoJo Francisco inspect tools created for the new Custodial Team Cleaning program. (June 2016)

“The COVID-19 pandemic presents a major challenge to our Union and our Nation, but it’s one I know we’ll get through together. There are so many heroes on the front lines. One that I want to mention is our APWU Custodians. Our custodians are doing extra to keep our offices clean. They are wiping down non-porous areas that are frequented by clerks, carriers, drivers and mail handlers. Custodians everywhere are working around the clock to protect Americans. It is one of the most important jobs in overcoming this pandemic.

APWU Custodians will take extra precautions and prioritize the health and safety for us at work and our families and communities.”

Both of you are a 100% correct on how useless the TL5 CTC is.

The offices and plants that made the change are not adequately prepared to handle what is going on. The products used to clean, simply put, don’t. Using a cloth 16 times, is ridiculous. There is a shortage of what is needed to clean and disinfect.

The MMO from 2009 that established the extra cleaning and disinfecting would have kept us better prepared if only management would abide by it.

Glenda your comments are right on the money. Let’s speak truth to what is going on. The MS-47 changes with Team Cleaning have been widely criticized. It’s well known the cleaning products are useless. Cleaning large areas with a vacuum cleaner is a joke. Postal facilities nationwide are not as clean as they were prior to these changes.

What team benefited from Team Cleaning? It was Our Team. Now we have a catastrophe in the making. When all of this is over let’s hope our National Officers take a hard nose stance on cleaning and be willing to go to the mat to reverse this joke called “Team Cleaning.”

Doesn’t anyone think maybe it is time to address the inadequate CTC cleaning agents and the whole system? CTC is about looking clean, not about being clean. The chemicals are like kool-aid. The folding rag system is gross! The equipment is NOT ergonomic!! I have had two carpel tunnel surgeries since CTC. We need to use paper towels and throw away!! Not fold the rag and use all 16 sides!!! The mops never pick up anything, they just move the dirt around. It is disgusting. TELL THE TRUTH!!! Plus, they cut back on the amount of time to clean everything! They cut jobs and now we have an illness running through our postal veins!

The thanks is greatly appreciated. Though I must say the Custodians are way under paid for the risk they are taking. I am fortunate because I am an excessed Clerk being paid higher level. The Custodian that works by my side is new to the craft starting last March and is taking risk each day yet not being compensated properly. And yes, every postal employee is taking a risk showing up for work. But, as you stated, it is the Custodians that are keeping everyone safe.
