As we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day, I would ask that all postal employees remember those who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces. We should never forget the ultimate sacrifice that our service men and women have made in defense of America and the freedoms that we enjoy every day.

Sometimes — during the frenetic pace of our daily lives — we take our liberties for granted. But something as fundamental as the free flow of mail is not allowed in some places around the globe.

On Monday, at the World Stamp Show in New York City, we will honor our military heroes with the release of the four Honoring Extraordinary Heroism: The Service Cross Medals stamps — the Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, Air Force Cross and Coast Guard Cross.

So enjoy the weekend with family and friends. But let’s take time to reflect and be thankful. Visit a national cemetery or memorial. Help educate the younger generation on the sacrifices that have been made. Thank a veteran.

I would personally like to thank the more than 113,000 veterans who are now postal employees, many in leadership roles. I am proud to say that we are one of the nation’s largest employers of veterans.

I appreciate their dedication and hard work, and the work of all postal employees.

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day.
